Your live release rate (also called your save rate) is the single most-watched number in shelter and rescue work. It's the share of animals that leave your care alive. Use the free calculator below to find yours, then read on for the formula, benchmarks, and practical ways to raise it.
Calculate your live release rate
Enter outcomes for the period you want to measure (e.g. a month or a year). Leave fields blank or 0 if they don't apply.
This calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere or stored.
The live release rate formula
Live Outcomes = Adoptions + Returned to Owner + Transferred Out + Other Live
Total Outcomes = Live Outcomes + Euthanized + Died/Lost in Care
For example, if a shelter has 850 live outcomes and 50 non-live outcomes in a year, total outcomes are 900, and the live release rate is 850 ÷ 900 = 94.4%.
A couple of notes on definitions, because they trip people up:
- It's based on outcomes, not intake. Animals still in your care at the end of the period aren't counted until they leave.
- Transfers out count as live. Sending an animal to a rescue partner is a live outcome for your organization.
- Some reporting standards adjust for special cases — for instance, owner-requested euthanasia of an irremediably suffering animal. National frameworks like Shelter Animals Count and the Asilomar Accords define these edges precisely; this calculator uses the common, simplified version.
What is a good live release rate?
The most widely cited benchmark is 90% — the threshold commonly used to describe a "no-kill" shelter or community, meaning at least 9 of every 10 animals leave alive.
| Live release rate | What it generally indicates |
|---|---|
| 90%+ | Commonly described as no-kill |
| 80–89% | Strong outcomes; closing in on no-kill |
| Below 80% | Meaningful room to improve live outcomes |
Context matters: open-admission municipal shelters that take every animal will have a different starting point than a selective-intake rescue. The most useful comparison is your own trend over time.
How to improve your live release rate
- Make adoptions easier. Online listings, remote applications, and e-signatures shrink the time from "interested" to "adopted." Pet Friend syncs listings to Petfinder automatically.
- Grow your foster network. Foster homes create capacity so you're not forced into hard choices on space.
- Strengthen return-to-owner. Microchip scanning and registration get strays home faster — a live outcome that also frees up kennels.
- Build transfer partnerships. Move animals to rescues and other shelters with the demand or specialty care.
- Measure relentlessly. You can't improve what you don't track. Good animal shelter software calculates intake, outcome, and live-release reports automatically so you see the number change in real time.
Track your live release rate automatically
Pet Friend generates intake, outcome, and live-release reports from the data you already enter — no spreadsheets. See it on your own data.
